The automotive industry is pivoting away from traditional revenue streams and looking to deploy EV product lines. A space that traditionally has had large barriers to entry, now automotive manufacturing is seeing start-ups going head-to-head with established players. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), by 2025, around 20% of all vehicles on the road in Southeast Asia will be electric, with around 60 million two- and three-wheelers and 10 million four-wheel vehicles. How can the region reap the benefits of mobility electrification and extend their footprint into EV and battery production?

Scaling Southeast Asia’ Charging Infrastructure

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) on our roads is expected to increase noticeably over the next decade. To accommodate them, the energy sector needs to plan for increased domestic consumption at off-peak times for overnight charging. In addition, to avoid placing a bottleneck onto EV adoption, strong charging access at places such as residences and office buildings is imperative. In addition, convenient charging outside of one’s house (or job) will be critical to EV expansion. Such “on-the-go” charge-ups will have to be as simple as fueling an ICE vehicle today. Thus, encouragement for large retailers and shared mobility providers to invest in charging infrastructure is necessary. On the 2-wheelers front, it is crucial to develop a common battery standard to enable battery-swapping for 2-wheelers. In this panel, esteemed experts will look at the technologies (AC, DC and wireless), scenarios of Asia closing its charging gap, and the collaborative efforts need to resolve it.

Developing a Sustainable Supply Chain for the ASEAN EV Revolution

Some ASEAN countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines have one of the largest reserves of crucial elements in the manufacturing of EV batteries, as well as developed automotive manufacturing industry. Thus, governments of ASEAN have announced plans to leapfrog into an important base for EV as well as EV batteries manufacturing.

At the same time, the EV industry will need many lithium-ion batteries to electrify many of the world's automobiles in the coming years. And that will need the development of entirely new sources and methods for locating, extracting, and processing battery elements like lithium, cobalt, and nickel.

These minerals are currently mined from under the earth's surface. For humanitarian or environmental reasons, the mining process might be challenging at times. Fortunately, battery titans, tech startups, EV producers, investors, and politicians are all refocusing their efforts on finding new and sustainable battery sources.

This panel will tackle the latest developments in exploring and mining sustainable battery materials, and how new frameworks for deploying, reusing and recycling sustainable battery materials will look like. Despite its early stage, the development of circular and sustainable EV batteries will be paramount to both the mobility and energy revolution.
