Plugging into the Future – Electric Vehicles and Future Mobility in 2022 and beyond

Scene Setting Keynote

The automotive industry is pivoting away from traditional revenue streams and looking to deploy EV product lines. A space that traditionally has had large barriers to entry, now automotive manufacturing is seeing start-ups going head-to-head with established players. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), by 2025, around 20% of all vehicles on the road in Southeast Asia will be electric, with around 60 million two- and three-wheelers and 10 million four-wheel vehicles. How can the region reap the benefits of mobility electrification and extend their footprint into EV and battery production?

Building an Ecosystem That Enables ASEAN’s EV Mass Production & Adoption

Panel Session

To enable a vibrant EV production & consumption market in ASEAN, we will need close cooperation between the governments, energy sector and financiers. Although the total cost of ownership (TCO) of EV is becoming more comparable to ICE, further support is needed to bring down the up-front costs of EV. In addition, market penetration of EV not only presents a platform for new business models for energy suppliers but also the whole energy ecosystem. In this panel, various regulatory mechanisms and partnership models will be discussed to drive synergy and ecosystem-building in Southeast Asia’s clean mobility segment.

Scaling Southeast Asia’ Charging Infrastructure

Panel Session

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) on our roads is expected to increase noticeably over the next decade. To accommodate them, the energy sector needs to plan for increased domestic consumption at off-peak times for overnight charging. In addition, to avoid placing a bottleneck onto EV adoption, strong charging access at places such as residences and office buildings is imperative. In addition, convenient charging outside of one’s house (or job) will be critical to EV expansion. Such “on-the-go” charge-ups will have to be as simple as fueling an ICE vehicle today. Thus, encouragement for large retailers and shared mobility providers to invest in charging infrastructure is necessary. On the 2-wheelers front, it is crucial to develop a common battery standard to enable battery-swapping for 2-wheelers. In this panel, esteemed experts will look at the technologies (AC, DC and wireless), scenarios of Asia closing its charging gap, and the collaborative efforts need to resolve it.

Electrifying Asia’s Medium and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Fleet: The Way Ahead

Panel Session

The last decade has seen all-electric and plug-in hybrid EVs from many automakers become part of the mainstream market. One cannot help but wonder, where do medium- and heavy-duty EVs stand in the transition to electrification?

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the world will have 1.2 million electric buses. It is one of the most significant uptakes of EVs taking place today. With innovative megacities such as Shenzhen leading the way, Asia has the potential to become a world leader in electric public transportation.

In BNEF’s outlook, heavy-duty electric trucks become economically attractive in urban duty cycles by the mid-2020s. Megawatt-scale charging stations and the emergence of much higher energy density batteries by the late 2020s result in battery electric trucks becoming a viable option for heavy-duty long-haul operations, especially for volume-limited applications.

In this panel, esteemed experts will examine Asian’s path-breaking initiatives in the sector, major market opportunities and getting the grid ready for an electrified medium and heavy-duty vehicle fleet.

Threats and Opportunities from E-Mobility for Auto Parts Manufacturers in Southeast Asia

Keynote

The adoption of electric vehicles in Southeast Asia is accelerating. Along with it, there are changes in the competitive landscape among automakers and in the supply chain. As a result, Southeast Asian ICE component manufacturers who represent a multi-billion dollar industry - that gives employment to hundreds of thousands of people in the region - will find it increasingly more difficult to maintain the status quo.
In this presentation, we will show that a shift to electric vehicles, and fully electric vehicles in particular, will further accelerate. However, the transition to e-mobility is not only a threat but also a big opportunity for component manufacturers that will take the right actions.

Developing a Sustainable Supply Chain for the ASEAN EV Revolution

Panel Session

Some ASEAN countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines have one of the largest reserves of crucial elements in the manufacturing of EV batteries, as well as developed automotive manufacturing industry. Thus, governments of ASEAN have announced plans to leapfrog into an important base for EV as well as EV batteries manufacturing.

At the same time, the EV industry will need many lithium-ion batteries to electrify many of the world's automobiles in the coming years. And that will need the development of entirely new sources and methods for locating, extracting, and processing battery elements like lithium, cobalt, and nickel.

These minerals are currently mined from under the earth's surface. For humanitarian or environmental reasons, the mining process might be challenging at times. Fortunately, battery titans, tech startups, EV producers, investors, and politicians are all refocusing their efforts on finding new and sustainable battery sources.

This panel will tackle the latest developments in exploring and mining sustainable battery materials, and how new frameworks for deploying, reusing and recycling sustainable battery materials will look like. Despite its early stage, the development of circular and sustainable EV batteries will be paramount to both the mobility and energy revolution.

Bridging the $50bn EV Charging Infrastructure Investment Gap with Innovative Financing Models

Panel Session

According to a Siemens report, Asia-Pacific has a $50bn EV charging infrastructure gap to be met by 2026. If the electric charging infrastructure does not increase at a comparable rate, the predicted fast rise in electric vehicles in Southeast Asia will not materialize. The amount of capital expenditure necessary to develop that infrastructure is enormous, and it is not feasible to depend entirely on public funds. To enhancing the bankability of EV charging infrastructure, smart private sector funding is required. The rate of EV charging infrastructure deployment will be determined by the use of such financing alternatives and will in turn play a key role in the growth of Southeast Asia as a global EV hub.

In this panel, new financing models such as charging-as-a-service, battery leasing, free service will be explored, as well mechanisms such as credit guarantees, charging infrastructure carbon credits and lease-to-own models. The panel will also bring together innovative start-ups with utilities, O&G companies, automakers, project finance banks, infrastructure investors and private equity firms to bridge the financing gap in the EV charging infrastructure field.

Finding the Path to Autonomous, Connected & Shared Mobility in Southeast Asia

Panel Session

The transport sector is undergoing significant changes, shifting towards a future that is Connected, Autonomous, Shared and Electric (CASE). Each of these trends has the potential to impact everything, from our everyday commute to the design of urban places.

Among them, autonomous (AV) & connected vehicles, will be one of the most important disruptions for our time. By eliminating the need for a human driver, they can cut accidents, GHG emissions and make travelling more pleasurable.

Before we can reap these benefits, governments and companies must first come together and overcome the challenges this new technology is posing, such as unclear industry standards and regulatory frameworks, safety and security concerns, insufficient road & digital infrastructure, and consumer hesitancy.

In this panel, esteemed panelists will provide an overview of the technology and delve into issues surrounding this fast-growing industry. The development status of AVs & connected mobility in various Asian countries and cities will be discussed. Finally, panelists will propose strategies for Asia to overcome the concerns and challenges to drive AV & connected mobility adoption.
